Let’s be honest.
“I’m working on it” has become the most socially acceptable way to delay change without taking responsibility.
It sounds mature.
It sounds self-aware.
It sounds like growth.
But after a while?
It means nothing.
At first, “I’m working on it” meant:
- I see the problem
- I accept my role
- I’m actively changing
It bought time because effort was visible.
But now?
It’s often just a pause button.
What “I’m Working on It” Really Means (Most of the Time)
It means:
- Please stop holding me accountable
- Please don’t leave yet
- Please be patient while nothing changes
It’s not a plan.
It’s not a timeline.
It’s not proof.
It’s a sentence designed to keep access.
The Pattern People Ignore
Watch closely.
The behavior repeats.
The apology sounds familiar.
The insight gets better.
The outcome stays the same.
They can explain the issue perfectly.
They just don’t correct it.
Awareness without action is not growth.
It’s performance.
Because it shifts the burden.
Once someone says “I’m working on it,” you become the unreasonable one if you:
- Ask again
- Expect consistency
- Get tired
Your boundaries start to look like pressure.
Your needs start to look like impatience.
That’s how people get stuck for years.
The Most Uncomfortable Truth
If someone has been “working on it” longer than it takes to feel the damage…
They’re not working on it.
They’re managing you.
Real work is boring and inconvenient.
It looks like:
- Changed behavior when no one is watching
- Fewer explanations, more correction
- Discomfort without defensiveness
- Progress you don’t have to beg for
If you have to keep asking for evidence, that is the evidence.

Why This Post Will Make People Angry
Because it removes the hiding place.
It says:
- Insight isn’t enough
- Intent isn’t enough
- Struggle isn’t enough
Only change counts.
And a lot of people have built their identity around almost changing.
At some point, “I’m working on it” becomes:
“I’m asking you to accept this.”
You’re allowed to say no.
Go Deeper
This isn’t about being harsh.
It’s about being honest before time does the damage.
